What to Know When Interacting with Your Financial Institution on Social Media

Banks and credit unions are using social media now more than ever to share news, advertise products and to connect with the community. In some cases, they may even provide a gateway for customers to access their accounts and to solicit feedback.

Here are some things to keep in mind:

  • Social media may be a good way to learn about new products or services or be eligible to obtain special offers
  • Keep in mind that any communication on social media platforms could become public, even though you can protect your communications and posts to some extent through your account settings
  • Consider checking out your financial institution’s social media policies before you connect with your bank or credit union’s social media. To view TFCU’s policy click HERE.
  • Remember to never include any personal, confidential, or account information in your posts
  • Reputable social media sites will not ask for your social security number, card number, account number or password
  • Consider calling your bank or credit union directly or using a secure communication channel such as online banking when you need to provide specific or personal information

An article put out by the FDIC (Federal Deposit Insurance Company) goes into much more detail on what to look for and what to be aware of when interacting with a financial institution through social media.

More often you may simply enjoy fun and entertaining photos and video clips that help you learn more about the credit union (or bank) you have a relationship with.

Check out TFCU on our Instagram page @tucsonfcu to enjoy news updates, funny video clip reminders as well as some of our friendly staff.  But always be aware of the tips I’ve mentioned above.

I encourage you to read the full article HERE so you can enjoy your financial institution through social media with confidence.

And you never know, you may even see a post on Financial Coaching! I am passionate about helping members plan and protect their finances and if you’d like to take control of your money instead of your money controlling you, let’s meet.
