Scammers Target Young Adults on Social Media with Fake Check Scam!

Young adults have reported a scam on social media where they get a direct message from someone who says they like their photo and want to PAY them thousands of dollars to use it.

Next, they send a check. They ask them to deposit the check and send some of the money back to the artist for supplies, then keep the rest.  They may also promise to reimburse any money sent back to them.

Here’s the truth: If someone you don’t know sends you a check and asks you to send money back to them or someone else, it’s a scam.

If you are a young adult, beware!  Although the bank or credit union will try and catch these fraudulent checks, it’s not always guaranteed.  And any check you accept and deposit, you are responsible for.  If it is returned fraudulent, you take the loss.

If you ever have a question, ask one of our employees.  And always be careful not to give out personal information online.

The FTC provides additional information about this and other scams.
