Credit Report Fraud Alert and Credit Freeze

What’s the difference?

Did you know you can place a Fraud Alert on your credit report?

A Fraud Alert will help alert lenders, or others who may pull your credit, to possible fraud.  Before proceeding they would need to verify your identity, usually by calling the number you provide in the alert. The alert is free and will last one year.

You may also do a Credit Freeze.

A Credit Freeze restricts access to your credit report to help protect your identity.  Generally, you will need a PIN or password to place or lift the freeze. The freeze is free and lasts until you lift it.

The Federal Trade Commission offers a handy help sheet that explains in more detail and provides contact information for the reporting agencies.
