Five Ways to Keep Scammers and Hackers Away
On a recent Consumer Alert from the Federal Trade Commission, we are reminded of the importance of staying alert and following safety tips to keep our information safe.
Five things that we can do to keep scammers and hackers away include:
- Secure our accounts with strong passwords and enable two-factor authentication on sensitive accounts like email or financial accounts.
- Keep security software, operating system and internet browsers and apps up to date.
- Your wireless network is the gateway to all the Wi-Fi enabled devices in your home. Make sure you create a Wi-Fi network and router admin password that is strong. And encrypt your network to prevent unauthorized access.
- Set your computer, phone and tablets to lock when you’re not using them.
- Create a backup copy of your information. Should your device get infected, hacked, stolen or lost it will allow you to recover your personal information.
Should you get scammed or hacked, report it at www.reportfraud.ftc.gov. If someone has stolen your personal information, report it, and get recovery steps at www.identitytheft.gov.
